Meet Mr. Walker (5th Grade, SPED)

Hello! And welcome to my Mindful Math Class!

My name is Mr. Walker and I am a Special Education 5th Grade Math Teacher at MIS. I provide in-class- support for Ms. Dahlin and Ms. Ballast in their classrooms. I also have my own classroom where I am able to take a more one-on-one approach to teach my students who have learning disabilities. My first SPED teaching assignment was to Bloomfield Middle School in Kentucky where I taught Math Intervention to 6th and 7th graders. I graduated from Houston Baptist University in 2011 and I am in the process of earning a Master of Spiritual Formation from Asbury Theological Seminary. This year I am also taking online classes at

The smartest thing I ever did was marry my Best Friend.  I am a father to two grown men who I am very proud of. One of them was a SPED Learning Disabled student throughout his school years. He is a Chef today! I have three grandchildren that call me "Papaw". We have a 17-year-old cat named Sonya and I love dogs, so we are hoping to adopt just the right puppy for our family soon. I enjoy traveling and have been to England, Belize and Mexico. I grade papers while cheering for my favorite sports teams -- the HOUSTON TEXANS! and the HOUSTONASTROS!

I love kids. And I love teaching. When you are in my class it is my intention to make you feel welcomed and supported. Each day you will enter into your journal three things that you are grateful for. Why? Because I believe that when we possess a grateful heart our mind possesses a more positive attitude. Studies suggest that when our heart and mind are in the right place, it is easier to be in control of our behavior and take responsibility for our own learning. As more schools are using this simple practice they are seeing these amazing results: less bullying, more compassion, better grades, and happier students. I have no doubt you are going to do great!

For the 2018-2019 school year, I am especially excited to be journeying with you in our brand new Magnolia Intermediate School! I sense you are excited about this, too! There is something special about being the first to walk these halls, isn't there? I mean, stop and think about that a minute. Together and individually we will leave a lasting, historical footprint on MIS! Yes, I would say that is very COOL!

Please check out the links on the SIDEBAR for important information about my class.

With Gratitude,
PLEASE, text @walkersmat to 81010 for an invitation to JOIN MY CLASS on REMIND. This is a  communication app that I am using to keep you up to date with what's going on in class this year! Click HERE for more info about it.
I REALLY WANNA KNOW! What are you grateful for? Where were you born? Do you have brother's and sisters? Do you have a favorite sport's team? What is your favorite ice cream? Candybar? How about your favorite color? What's your favorite subject in school? Have you ever traveled out of Texas? If you could be any animal in the world what animal would it be? What's your favorite joke? What do you fear most about this school year?
